Interview
The world is our territory
Christophe Roulet: How would you describe the world of fine watches and fine jewellery?
But there are watchmakers who, even without this longevity, can rightfully claim membership of this club?
This kind of talk suggests this is something of an elitist club. Would you agree?
Don’t you feel there’s been some usurping of the "fine watch" and "fine jewellery" designations these past few years?
Do you consider after-sales service to be an essential aspect of fine watches?
Over recent years we’ve witnessed an unprecedented increase in fine watch companies’ prices. Are they playing with fire?
But do you think such prices are justified?
Would you say that the Cartier name alone gives you competitive edge?
Are you concerned that products may become too technical?
In your opinion, why have watches become luxury goods?
After a quarter millennium celebrated in style, what next?
Flavia Giovannelli
Briefly, how did you prepare for this gigantic celebration?
Which aspects were you personally most involved in?
Have such high standards had an impact on delivery times for these models?
How did the public respond to this unique anniversary collection and the choice of models?
Did celebrations extend to staff?
And the most important question: is there a risk that things might "fall flat" after such a high point?
Vacheron Constantin

"Omega is clearly a universal brand"
How did the Omega brand, as part of the Swatch Group, go about producing its first calibre, the 8500 and its offshoot the 8501?
With projects like this, do you intend positioning Omega further towards the high end of the market?
Would you say Omega is one of the few universal brands?
What would you say distinguishes Omega’s DNA?
We often hear of rivalry between Rolex and Omega. Is it the case?
Will the OmegaMania thematic sale, organised by Antiquorum, raise awareness of the brand?
For a lot of watch firms, 2007 is already in the bag and thoughts are turning to 2008. Is this the case for Omega?
There will be a Hublot movement in 2008
Christophe Roulet: First Blancpain and Omega, now Hublot. How do you explain this new success?
Do you think your own personality has had something to do with this success, whether at Hublot or another brand?
Is this "taking off", as you say, synonymous with verticalisation?
Swiss Made?
You mentioned a new production facility. Will it be self-financed?
How much longer do you think you can keep growing at this rate?
Has it been difficult managing this growth?
Was Hublot an easier challenge to take up than Blancpain or Omega?
What does Hublot have in store for 2007?
Jaeger-LeCoultre is turned more than ever towards innovation
Extreme LAB caused quite a sensation at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie!
Will these projects make it harder to go on producing new calibres each year?
How do you view the current buoyant state of the market?
Do you plan on extending your network of own-name boutiques?
"Marketing has taken over"
What’s your approach to watchmaking?
What does this mean in practical terms?
So as far as you’re concerned, form comes first?
What importance do you give movements?
Industry or craft, a choice has to be made?
And you think it’s gone too far?
Do you never have any problems with supplies?
Parmigiani aims to double production in three years
How is the Parmigiani brand evolving?
What about Vaucher Manufacture?
How long did it take to build a veritable watch group?
What’s your view of the dozens of new brands that have appeared over the past two to three years, particularly in the luxury watch segment?
Would you say that ten years has been an important milestone for the Parmigiani brand?
"We’ve got time to prepare for the introduction of Swiss Made"
You say brands are wrong to predict a shortage of watch cases if the revised Swiss Made regulations go through. Why?
Brands are facing huge backlogs in deliveries. How can suppliers meet this demand?
Why don’t suppliers increase their production capacity?
Maybe they’re concerned that a slowdown will lead to a drop in orders?
You’ve announced an increase in production from 36,000 to 100,000 cases in one year. How did you manage this?
Why aren’t other suppliers making such progress? Are you the exception?
You mentioned new technologies as a way of increasing production. What exactly are they?
Would you use metal injection molding (MIM) which is more for mid-range production?
Roth and Genta recover their DNA
What was the situation at Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta when you joined The Hour Glass and took charge of the two brands?
So you were basically starting from scratch?
What attitude did the new owner, Bulgari, take?
Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta are best-known for grandes complications watches. How do you organise production?
Has this been your philosophy when developing your own movement?
Are supplies a problem?
The contemporary soul of Jaeger-LeCoultre
The inauguration of the Heritage Gallery is the ideal pretext for redefining Jaeger-LeCoultre’s DNA… What is it?
Do you think that resources for the future are taken from your roots?
The increase in watch making proposals over the past four years has been impressive. How many people work in development?
Jaeger-LeCoultre is an essential economic player in the Joux Valley, how many employees work in the manufacture today?
Why did you prefer the term heritage Gallery as opposed to museum?
Is this place open to the general public?
Besides the brand’s collection of old and current timepieces and the some 200 patents, can you talk to us about the monumental movement showcase?
A movement has never been displayed in this way, like a monumental contemporary work of art…
Past and future come successfully together for Zenith
So Zenith is once again active on all fronts ?
Have sales increased too ?
What is behind this renewed success ?
Has the Manufacture been rejuvenated too ?
You’ve also placed particular emphasis on innovative materials.
How does the Zenith Design Studio operate ?
So Zenith put a lot of work into its star collection’s success ?
Jean-Christophe Bédos: "Innovation is an essential value for Boucheron"
What have your priorities been since your appointment as CEO in 2004 ?
This year Boucheron is celebrating its 150th anniversary. How does the brand position itself in luxury today ?
Jewellery, watches, perfumes, mobile phones… why such diversification ?
Boucheron is launching a men’s watch in collaboration with Girard-Perregaux. Does this imply that the brand is looking to move further into the men’s watch market ?
How does Boucheron intend commemorating its 150th anniversary year ?
"Those who don’t want us don’t deserve us!"
How would you define Fine Watchmaking?
How does the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie operate in this environment?
So why do certain brands not support this mission, which apparently sets out to embrace Fine Watchmaking as a whole?
You recently announced that the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie was becoming independent of the Foundation which was previously responsible for it. Why this change?
All the same, it has been said that the Foundation is finding it hard to break free from the Richemont Group.
Vincent Calabrese joins the ranks at Blancpain
How far back do your relations with Blancpain go ?
So making this one-minute flying karrusel paved the way for the collaboration you announced today ?
You’re losing your independence and you seem delighted. Surely something of a contradiction ?
In concrete terms, what form will this collaboration take ?
Will there be a "Blancpain by Calabrese" collection ?
Meeting the industry at the Société Suisse de Chronométrie
You recently launched a new initiative, the "Petits Déjeuners Horlogers." What are they in response to ?
These breakfasts aren’t the only events you organise ?
You say watchmaking schools were invited to the breakfast. Does the SSC also support vocational training ?
Is this something the SSC’s next President will carry on ?
How can the SSC’s past contribute to its activities today ?
Piaget opens its first thematic exhibition in Geneva
What incited you to open this first exhibition space in Geneva?
Are you still purchasing vintage models for Piaget’s heritage collection?
What is this first exhibition’s theme?
After Geneva, the exhibition will travel to Asia. Does this mean that these are more important markets for Piaget?
An independent panel of watch journalists has just awarded you its first "Man of the Year" title. What does this represent for you?
And are these efforts reflected in the brand’s sales?
Tag Heuer, a brand with multiple potential
How was Baselworld 2008 for Tag Heuer ?
Looking at growth in the watch sector these past few years, is Tag Heuer also upgrading its range and prices, as many other companies in the branch are ?
There is talk of a slowdown in the second half-year. What’s your view ?
But can production keep pace ?
To come back to the V4 and concept watches, what’s the situation to date ?
What projects does Tag Heuer have ?
Instruments & Mesures du Temps: born of a passion
What inspired you to launch a new brand in the Fine Watch jungle ?
So you decided to move up a gear ?
Which movements do you use for your watches ?
You’re also using I&MT to promote "The Race." How are the two linked ?
What are your immediate projects ?
Ten years on, an enormous leap for the mechanical watch
What prompted Chopard to join the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie?
How do you see the evolution of Haute Horlogerie, an activity which is drawing more and more companies?
Changes in recent years clearly indicate an upgrading of product ranges across the entire watchmaking sector. What do you make of this trend?
Where is Chopard in this universe?
Can you give some indications on how business is progressing as the end of 2008 draws closer?
With hindsight, how do you view Chopard’s development as a watchmaking manufacturer?
How is Chopard progressing with the development of its network of shops?
We talk more and more about quality control and after-sales service as key factors for the future. What do you think?
