Out walking in the mountains one day, I came across an old sundial whose inscription gave me food for thought. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something along these lines: man has always used many different materials to measure time, including light. Because we ourselves are made of many materials including, thankfully, light.

Auction fever for George Daniel's extraordinary collection

The sale of the extraordinary horological collection belonging to the late Dr George Daniels CBE was conducted at Sotheby’s in London on Tuesday 6 November 2012.
