With the economy back in business and exports on the rise again, brands are newly inclined to show off their capacity for innovation and imagination. Here are some of the watches from the stream of recent releases.
Xi Jinping’s call for “common prosperity” sent shudders through the stock market. This new policy, which portends a drop in purchasing power for the wealthiest Chinese, pushed down luxury share prices, which includes watch brands. What implications does this have?
However flamboyant the stands at Baselworld, these are times of crisis and every segment of the watch industry, including the very high end, is feeling the sting. One such brand is HD3 Complication, brainchild of designer Jorg Hysek in partnership with Fabrice Gonet and Valérie Ursenbacher. After hosting a presentation in Geneva, to coincide with the SIHH 2009, the brand is exhibiting privately in Basel, a first since its creation five years ago. Interview.
After Chapter 1, Chapter 2 continues the Maîtres du Temps story with an instantaneous triple calendar with large date. Roger Dubuis, Daniel Roth and Peter Speake-Marin are the master-watchmakers behind this latest instalment. Skipping ahead, the next episode, currently in preparation, will be… Chapter 6.
Kari Voutilainen was born in Finland in 1962, and admits that watchmaking has been his passion for the past thirty years. A passion that first took him to the Tapiola Watchmaking School, then on to the International Watchmaking School in Neuchâtel, where he completed the WOSTEP course in complication watches. Singled out by Parmigiani Mesure et Art du Temps, he spent ten years there before returning to WOSTEP and a three-year stint as director of the complication watch section. In 2002, Kari Voutilainen set up his own business in Môtiers, as an artisan d'horlogerie d'art. We caught up with him at Baselworld.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Manufacture Christophe Claret, the master-watchmaker has created DualTow, a single-pusher planetary-gear chronograph with striking mechanism, tourbillon and a belt-type hour and minute display. Put simply, a remarkable timepiece.
Jointly created by watchmaker Jean-Marc Wiederrecht and designer Eric Giroud, both eminent figures in their field, Opus 9 exists purely and simply to give the time by means of two diamond chains. Beautiful and essential.
Much like a haute couture boutique, Ateliers Parmigiani will convey the very essence of the brand in the world's major cities. After-sales service will also be optimised.
