This is a strong signal for the markets as the Swiss watch sector prepares to face important industrial challenges. As the National Museum of Singapore hosts "Treasures of Vacheron Constantin – A legacy of watchmaking since 1755", chief executive officer Juan-Carlos Torres talks about the wider implications of such an event.

On March 24th, the curtain will rise on Baselworld 2011, the watch and jewellery show which, year after year, brings more than a hundred thousand people to the city on the Rhine. I'll be one of them, wearing my three hats of journalist, interested visitor, and former executive in the sector. Which to a large extent sums up the people who from March 24th to 31st will be milling around the stands at Basel.

Over 1,000 journalists, 12,000 visitors, 19 brands. And hundreds of precious watches on display, the result of thousands and thousands of hours of work and selfless devotion to the year's new creations. All these figures pertain to the recent Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, and they all give me grounds for reflection and, why not, a suggestion that is perhaps less practical than visionary and, who knows, even a little prescient.
