Having cast off their dial, having rid their movement of extraneous matter, skeleton watches reveal all, or almost all, their mechanical anatomy. Take a peek, in images, at a branch of horology that has nothing to hide.

While Macbeth bid stars to hide their fires, watchmakers are determined to let their movements shine in full view. Skeleton watches have continued to gain ground in recent years, and are back with a vengeance this season. Watchmakers deploy a wealth of expertise when reducing components to barely-there levels. This is an exercise that requires both skill and nerve, and which leaves us in awe before these light-filled, whirring sculptures. Striking the perfect balance between fragility, solidity and aesthetic exigency, the year’s new crop of skeleton watches offers further, eloquent proof of fine watch brands’ ability to merge technical constraints, imagination and human skill.
