The technical characteristics of the Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic, one of the three Official Watches created by Panerai for Oracle Team USA on the occasion of the 2017 America’s Cup, are examples of this excellence, paying tribute to the legend of a team of professionals who have contributed so much to the history of sailing. Made from a special synthetic ceramic obtained from zirconium oxide, the case of the Luminor 1950 (44mm in diameter) is light and strong, with a uniform matt black appearance and the look of a sports watch. Also made of this ceramic is the bridge lever device which protects the winding crown from accidental shocks while exercising a light pressure on it, thus helping to increase the degree of the watch’s water-resistance to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres). The titanium back is screwed in place and it carries the logo Oracle Team USA, the inscription 35th America’s Cup and a drawing of the legendary trimaran of the defending team in relief.
With the P.9100 Manufacture calibre, the Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic is a chronograph with the flyback function, which enables the moving chronograph hands to be zeroed and instantly restarted by a single pressure, without needing first to stop it moving and returning it to zero. In the new Panerai Special Edition created for Oracle Team USA, the push-piece which controls the stopping and starting of the chronograph is at 10 o’clock, while the push-piece at 8 o’clock activates the flyback function and zeroes the chronograph after it has stopped. To make them easy and clear to read against the black dial, the chronograph minutes and seconds hands are positioned centrally and distinguished by the colours of the America’s Cup: the seconds hand is blue while the minutes hand is red, moving forward in jumps. The two small counters use the same colours to make their indications clear: the continuous seconds hand at 9 o’clock is blue, while the chronograph hour hand at 3 o’clock is red. On the flange is a useful red tachymeter scale in knots, which enables the speed of a vessel over a given distance to be determined.
The P.9100 calibre has many details which testify to its sophisticated construction: a vertical clutch, column wheel, two spring barrels connected in series which provide a power reserve of three days, a rotor which winds the springs of the barrels in both directions, and the variable inertia balance which oscillates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. To ensure the maximum precision when setting the watch, the mechanism also has the device for stopping the balance, the seconds reset mechanism and the means enabling the hour hand to be moved backwards or forwards in one-hour jumps, without interfering with the movement of the minute hand or the running of the watch.
