In the wake of the recent Marilyn Monroe auction at Julien’s, in which her Blancpain diamond cocktail watch was sold, we look to Instagram to find the most talked-about Blancpain watches on the social media site. Blancpain, a brand famous for creating the 1735 Grande Complication, one of the most complicated wristwatches on the planet, has seen success in recent years under Chairman and CEO Marc A. Hayek. In the past 10 years, the Fifty Fathoms has been revived and the Villeret collection subtly reinterpreted, while the L-evolution collection has been launched.
Through Instagram, we searched #Blancpain and hashtags related to their complete collection of watches. To keep the sample size reasonable, we looked over the past thousand wristwatch images to see which were their most popular models. We also sifted through several thousand images of cars on the Blancpain hashtag, given the popularity of the Blancpain GT Series. But back to the watches. Here is our list of the six most spoken-about watches on Instagram in ascending order:
6 ) Blancpain Stainless Steel Leman Triple Date Moonphase
Interestingly, the rise of steel watch popularity is a topic we recently covered. This one may not be on the list of ‘top 5 mentioned stainless steel watches’ but it’s definitely causing a scene over on Instagram. The watch boasts a stainless steel case (obviously), a white face with large Roman numeral hour indicators, day, date and month complications – and even a moonphase calendar.
5) Blancpain Stainless Steel Villeret Quantieme Complet Moonphase
A second steel watch for the list and not a million miles away from the Leman Triple Date Moonphase, the Villeret Quantieme Complet Moonphase boasts a more classic aesthetic than the Leman with a black leather strap, numerals on the outside of the face and smaller date indicators on the inside.
4) Blancpain Villeret Perpetual Calendar
Blancpain’s ability to develop its own movements has given it almost infinite creative freedom in terms of fine watchmaking. Its expertise and constant endeavour to innovate has meant it can create something truly beautiful with this new perpetual calendar movement with a large moonphase. The watch matches classic aesthetics with innovative, intelligent watchmaking.
3) Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Flyback Chronograph Ocean Commitment I&II
A watch that Blancpain has been exhibiting worldwide for the past two months, it comes as no surprise that the Ocean Commitment series has been popular among online communities. The new 250-piece limited edition boasts a full blue ceramic case – something previously impossible due to matching colours through two different techniques. We recently spoke about the buzz around the Ocean Commitment in a trend report.
2) Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Ceramic
This 2015 material updates a classic. Originally designed to be the Fifty Fathom’s Millennials-friendly counterpart, forcing its way into a new audience, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Ceramic lived up to the hype it created a year ago and managed to find a perfect balance between new and old. The timepiece has a glass back, luminous markers on the hands and a thin NATO strap.
1) Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique 5015
The classic. Blancpain’s staple piece, if you like, was a clear winner when it came to Instagram posting. The reissue of their base Fifty Fathoms Automatique has been a cornerstone of their dive watch collection since its original release. The watch has a curved sapphire crystal bezel, bezeled numerals in SuperLumiNova and water-resistance up to 1,000 feet.
So there we have it folks, a list of the most popular Blancpain watches on Instagram. The list includes some truly stunning timepieces and is proof that a brand so steeped in fine watchmaking history is still very current online.
Unsurprisingly, the Fifty Fathoms collection was heavily mentioned. When the first version of the Fifty Fathoms was released in 1953 it was truly innovative, a diving watch that lived up to its name. Since then, the collection has gone from strength to strength and always strives for innovation in its workings. The aesthetics of the watch, however, have changed very little from the first model ever made. This really speaks volumes about just how great it looked back then… and now, for that matter.
